Can I pour hot water from a hot water urn, using a kli sheni, over a filter that has ground coffee in it, as in the Mishna on page 139b of Shabbat, “We may pour water over dregs so that [the dregs] become cleared”?
Rabbi Abadi says you may not use the filter for coffee on Shabbos
How about on Yom Tov, May one use it on Yom Tov?
Yes yomtov is ok
Does this article help at all? IE if someone drinks turkish coffee, would it then be okay? https://shulchanaruchharav.com/filtering-coffee-on-shabbos/
What is the Rav’s reasoning for prohibiting?
What is the issue with using the filter on Shabbos?
- The water is from a kli sheini so it is not cooking
- You are removing the wanted from the unwanted
- It is for immediate use
If appropriate, please tell me why the example in the Mishna of pouring water over the grape dregs and being allowed to drink the filtered wine that comes through (as in page 139b of Shabbat) is not applicable here.

Is this applicable to a coffeemaker on a timer? In other words, is it asur to have a filter on a coffeemaker on a timer?
On a timer is not a problem
