Emulsifiers

I see many times in the ingredients various types of emulsifiers and so far every time you said Kosher. Are all emulsifiers good? I have heard that sometimes emulsifiers can be made from an animal? Is that an issue?

You don’t have to worry about them neimg from an animal.

First, it’s very rare due to price difference between animal based and plant based.

Second, and more importantly, it never has the taste of meat.

some people have told me it’s a davar hamaamid - is that not an issue here?

How so?

I’ve heard this numerous times from various rabbanim- that they call it a davar hamaamid- I don’t know the actual metsius of emulsifiers - that’s why I’m asking but from my google search it seems that they bind things together like oil and water- not sure if that’s davar hamaamid or not… please let me know what you know about it…

It’s not a problem.

There are multiple angles to look at it. Any one of them would be enough to matir.

Let’s just emphasize two points.

  1. Rav Abadi didn’t consider it a maamid. (I read that there are machmirim, but hechsher companies go like this too Halachah Lemaaseh. As far as I can tell. Based on articles from the OU amd CRC.)
  2. Even if it was, it has to be something that is itself Assur. Something that acts as a chemical and isn’t edible isn’t a problem. Think of gelatin as an example. Again, I know there are machmirim on that too but the Rabbi wasn’t.

great thanks for clarifying
