Hi Rabbi,

I was under the impression that Vanilla Extract is a problem. Does it depend on the product? Company? Just trying to gain an understanding.

Warmest Regards,

Rabbi Tawil

Vanilla extract that we buy in the store can be a problem because it often contains alcohol.

On an ingredient panel, however, it is required to be listed. So if there’s alcohol the FDA requires it to read something like this
Vanilla extract (vanilla, alcohol)

If it just says “vanilla extract,” there is no alcohol.

See this link for FDA info
Specifically look at #2 i & ii
§101.4 Food; designation of ingredients
