The laws of Shmittah

  1. It is not permitted to work the land during the year of Shmittah. Such as planting, plowing, harvesting and similar.
  2. With the exception that it is allowed to prevent damage to the fruits like watering the tree so it wonโ€™t die. But it is not allowed to prune or fertilize the tree so that it should grow better or nicer and similar.
  3. You need to be mafkir-make free, the fruits growing during the year of Shmittah.
  4. It is permitted to buy fruits from the heter mechirah-land sold to non Jews.
  5. You do not need to have a Shmittah box for left over fruits and vegetables. You can throw them into the garbage.
  6. You do not need to take Maaser from the heter mechirah-land sold to non Jews.
