Berachah on Sushi

What’s the Berachah on sushi?

Tough question.

The Rabbi wasn’t a fan of sushi. He thought it was crazy to eat raw fish.

The Rabbi told me Shahakol. I asked about the rice. He was barely Maskim that there should be a bracha at all. I’m not much of a sushi person and the conversation ended there.

Others had a similar experience where the Rabbi said Shehakol. They pushed back and explained how tasty the rice is and how it’s not just there to hold the fish etc. The Rabbi begrudgingly agreed that it’s Mezonot. This exact conversation was repeated multiple times with different people.

I defer to the others in this case, being that the Psak was repeated many times.

It’s important to add that many sushi rolls today don’t even have fish at all. In that case, the argument is even stronger that the main ingredient is the rice.
