Can I fry onions in a dairy pan and then use these onions in a meat food?

I want to prepare fried onions and vegetables in a dairy pan and then pour these fried vegetables into a pot of meat. Is this permitted? Is there a difference between Ashkenazim and Sephardim?

Even if the the dairy pan wasnt used for 24 hours?

That would be ok. But it would be ideal to use dairy for dairy and meat for meat.
