Cleaning Floor Shabbat

Hi Rabbi,

I would like to clarify how best to clean a floor in a permissible manner on shabbat.

  1. If water spills on the floor, can I use a paper towel to soak it up with my hands, assuming no squeezing is involved?

  2. Same as one except can I use a dry cloth towel?

  3. Can I use a dry paper towel attached to a Swiffer mop head to soak up a spill?

  4. Can I use a dry cloth towel attached to a Swiffer mop head to clean a floor assuming I will spray a cleaning solution directly on the floor and mop it?

  5. Same as 4. except can I use a dry cloth towel?

Thank you

  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. Yes
  4. Yes
  5. Yes
  1. I’m sorry, but it seems to me that if the towel is not intended for wiping the floors, then there is a fear that a person will wring out the water.

It depends on the intent, There aren’t any gezaras here. If a spill occurs and one just wants to soak up the liquid with a dry towel, then it’s not a problem.

What about ס’ ש"כ סע’ טו?

See Kaf Hachaim.
