What is the status of using hotel keys on Yom Tov? How about Shabbat?
Electronics on Shabbat is an old debate. Many prominent Rabbanim in the early 1900’s and since then approved of anything electric, with the determination that electricity itself does not violate the Shabbat.
Many Rabbis are adamantly against that and claim that electricity is a violation of any of several melachot.
We stay clear of this extremely heated debate and avoid answering questions like this.

Interesting. Quite recently, a notable MO Rabbi posted on his blog that “R. Yitzhak Abadi only permits using an electronic key card on Yom Tov, and he too does not require covering up the LED light.” Based off the awnser you gave, was he incorrect?
I said that we stay clear of this debate.
