Pest Control

Great measures were taken by the Torah to teach empathy for the creatures of this earth. One should not and may not cause undue suffering to animals.

With consideration, where does the topic of pest control fall on this spectrum? To achieve the least amount of upheaval, does killing a bug colony before it multiplies handle the situation better than waiting, or leaving things up to nature?

As a side note, I only noticed how in tune with the world one can become after we adopted a dog. We are truly the custodians of the earth. I think every Jewish family can surprisingly benefit and learn much about our surroundings by adopting some form of a pet (kids don’t count), as unorthodox as that sounds

Undue suffering is tzaar baalei chaim. And as you wrote, it is prohibited. Killing a bug doesn’t fall under that category

Why are insects not considered baalei chaim?

It’s baalei Chaim, so you don’t torture it unnecessarily.
