Planning non-kosher events for a secular organization

I recently became a member of my college’s student government. The student government is responsible, among other things, for planning events for students. Since this is a secular college, as things are now, these events won’t have kosher food and some will take place on Shabbat.

I’m not the president and don’t have the final control over these decisions, but I have several questions regarding this:

  1. Can I arrange for non-kosher food to be catered/purchased for these events? Does it make a difference if some of the students are Jewish (but completely non-religious)?

  2. Can I help arrange or plan events that are on Shabbat?

  3. If I think it’s the best time for students, can I suggest a Saturday event?

I obviously would never attend events on Shabbat or eat at these events, but I will have to be present at most of them.

These are all professional events arranged and planned on behalf of the school. They would never be held in a personal environment.

  1. Yes you can. It would be best if you could post a notice that none of the food is Kosher
  2. Yes you can
  3. No don’t suggest a Saturday event.
